fMRI Studies:

Pain Relief and Cortical Plasticity with Acupuncture:

This study demonstrated that carpal tunnel syndrome patients had differing brain scans from normal healthy adults using fMRI. The differences noted were with certain parts of the brain that were active in carpal tunnel patients that were not active normal healthy patients. These parts of the brain represented pain sensing areas. During acupuncture treatments over 5 weeks the active regions of the brain in carpal tunnel patients were suppressed and the patients felt relief. The paper suggests that acupuncture is capable of molding the brain by the use of stimuli to relieve pain and discomfort. From the paper’s conclusion: “Acupuncture, a somatosensory conditioning stimulus, shows promise in inducing beneficial cortical plasticity manifested by more focused digital representations.” Download Study Here (Right Click and Save Target as)

Somatosensory cortical plasticity in carpal tunnel syndrome—A cross-sectional fMRI evaluation

This is an important study that shows that carpel tunnel syndrome symptoms and pain is not just in the periphery (wrist) but associated with actual changes in the brain. Download Study Here (Right Click and Save Target as)

Hypothalamus and amygdala response to acupuncture stimuli in carpal tunnel syndrome

This study shows the brains response to acupuncture. This particular study also shows that chronic pain suffers’ brains respond differently to acupuncture then those of healthy participants. Download Study Here (Right Click and Save Target as)

Effects of Electro-acupuncture versus Manual Acupuncture on the Human Brain as Measured by fMRI

This is a great study that not only compares electro-acupuncture to manual acupuncture, but shows the vast effect it has on the brain. Acupuncture makes great changes on the brain that can be shown in fMRI scans. The study concludes that electro-acupuncture has very similar effects, if not greater, than manual. Do the neural correlates of acupuncture and placebo effects differ?

It is shown in this study that there are some overlaps in the effects of acupuncture and placebo. However, the evidence also shows that acupuncture stimulation is more specific and longer lasting. Download Study Here (Right Click and Save Target as)

Vaccines: One of the primary reasons I've placed this information on my website is because I'm often asked about immunizations/vaccines. I wanted to have a location that I could point everyone to for information. This small collection of documents and links is not, by far, an exhaustive view of the issue. I give this information to allow for a more educated look into the topic. This is not a black and white issue, therefore, I do not answer yes or no to the question of whether someone should or shouldn't receive a vaccine for themselves or their children. I do, however encourage my patients and friends to educate themselves on the issue so that they can make a decision based on fact, logic, and sound research. *The information and opinions expressed in the below links and documents are not necessarily shared by Dr. Herrin.*

Thimerosal in Childhood Vaccines, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, and Heart Disease in the United States by: Mark R. Geier, M.D., Ph.D., David A. Geier. This paper discusses the correlation between the presence of a mercury containing substance in vaccines and the neurodevelopment disorders, and heart disease. Click Here for the Study.

Early Downward Trends in Neurodevelopmental Disorders Following Removal of Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines by: David A. Geier, B.A., Mark R. Geier, M.D., Ph.D. This paper discusses the Downward trend or NDD after the removal of mercury from vaccines. Click Here for the study

Omega-3 Fatty Acids:

Influence of supplementary vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids on the antisocial behaviour of young adult prisoners: This study showed that young adult prisoners taking supplementary vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids had a reduction of 35.1% in violent offences! Click here for the study.

Some of the functions of "Essential Fatty Acids" (EFAs) are:

   * Maintaining of cell membrane fluidity, stability, and flexibility (also important for proper cell division and genetic expression)
   * Development and function of brain and nerve tissue
   * Oxygen transfer and energy production
   * Immune functions
   * Conversion into compounds involved in all body functions including local hormones governing inflammatory responses

EFAs deficiency is also linked with:

   * ADHD
   * Behavioral problems
   * Increased temper tantrums
   * Sleep Problems
   * Learn disabilities
   * Depression/Anxiety
   * Chronic inflammation
   * High blood pressure

Research has also shown EFAs to be beneficial in the following:

   * Pregnancy
         o The Brain is made up of 60% fat
         o Formula fed infants who unexplainably die have lower EFAs levels in their brains
   * Rheumatoid Arthritis
         o Inhibits the body’s inflammatory tendency
   * Brain
         o Imbalances and deficiencies in EFAs of the brain can cause Alzheimer’s disease, dementias, and cognitive impairment.
         o Improves mood, emotional stability, and depression (Arch Gen Psychiatry 1999;56:407-12)
   * Cancer
         o Men that eat no fish have a 2-3 fold higher chance of prostate cancer. (lancet 2001)
   * Asthma
         o Reduces inflammatory leukotrienes to prevent bronchial constriction. (NHANES I)
   * Atherosclerosis
   * Stroke
         o Reduces the risk of Stroke and thrombotic infarction (JAMA 2001)
   * Cardiovascular Disease
         o Inhibits coagulation (thins blood)
         o Reduces inflammation
         o Promotes Vasodialation

Stress harms brain in the womb This is a great article that shows that stress during pregnancy: Doubles the risk for ADHD (Attention Deficient Hyper-Activity Disorder) The chief among these stresses was emotional cruelty from a spouse or partner. Click here for the article.

Ultrasound: This is a study performed at Yale Medical School, and Others, demonstrating a negative impact of ultrasound on the developing fetal brain. Click Here

Important factor is having a healthy pregnancy:

  • Regular chiropractic adjustments
  • Reduced stress
  • Regular exercise
  • Health Diet
    • Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs, Omega-3)
    • Essential vitamins and minerals

Low Level Laser

Cell Viability, Proliferation, and Membrane Integrity Following Laser Irradiation: This study aimed to establish cellular responses to laser irradiation. They found that 5 J/cm2, power level, had a stimulatory influence in wounded cells. The stimulation increased cell proliferation and cell viability without adversely increasing cell damage. This lead to decreased healing times and wound closure. Click here for the study.

Comparative Study Using 685-nm and 830-nm Lasers in the Tissue Repair of Tenotomized Tendons in the Mouse: The objective of this study was to evaluate two different wavelengths on the healing process of the Achilles tendon of mice. The results showed that all the participating lasers had an accelerating effect on the healing of the tendon, although, the 685-nm had the highest results. Click here for the study.
